At low levels anxiety can help us stay focused and mentally alert. It helps us remember our passports at an airport, to remember to lock the doors when going away or to perform at our very best in an interview. In excess however and when anxiety becomes constant it can be crippling for the sufferer.

Anxiety is the body’s natural response to threat triggered by the sympathetic nervous system, often known as the flight or flight response and produces the following effects:


  • Increase in heart rate

  • The brain becomes highly alert

  • The breathing rate becomes rapid, providing more 02

  • Blood sugar levels increase to provide the body with its additional energy needs
  • Sweating increases to lower the temperature of the body
  • Muscles become highly alert and may perform feats of unusual strength


Anxiety Symptoms

  • Overwhelming feelings of panic
  • Feelings of going crazing and losing control
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations 
  • Feeling that you are about to pass out
  • Hypreventilation
  • Dissociation
  • Shaking or trembling 


Types of Anxiety

Anxiety disorders, can be grouped into six major types each having a distinct symptom profile: 

  • Anxiety attacks
  • Generalised anxiety disorder 
  • Phobia
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Not everyone who worries has an anxiety disorder. You may experince excessive anxiety if you are under a heavy work load, had a lack of sleep or even consumed to much caffiene.

It is important to visit your G.P to get a firm diagnosis of any anxiety disorder before seeking treatment to rule out a medical condition such as asthma, thyroid issues or hypoglycemia Side effects of certain medications can also cause anxiety symptoms.
