Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective.
A strong sense of confidence can be a self fulfilling prophecy to success just as a lack of confidence can lead to failure. A balance is needed between the two so as not to become over confident and not to lack confidence to the point of not trying.
Often people speak of wanting to be more confident “in general” but with careful targeting of the issues there are always specific areas where an individual is lacking in confidence rather than “in general”.
