Hypnotherapy for

I.B.S

It’s thought that around 5-10% of people suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) across the globe.

Although classified as a neurogastrointestinal disorder, the causes of IBS are poorly understood. The symptoms are thought to be the result of disturbances between how the brain, gut and the nervous system interact with each other.

Matt Jacobs at London Hypnosis has used hypnotherapy for 20 years to help alleviate the symptoms of IBS which can greatly improve the quality of life of IBS sufferers.

Break the cycle

Suffering from IBS can like a vicious circle. The symptoms: bloating, cramps, diarrhoea etc, can fire off anxiety and stress and worry. These responses then affect the gut and worsens the IBS which in turn creates more anxiety.

The thought of leaving the house and getting any of the above symptoms can often cause the sufferer to withdraw, which can seriously impact their quality of life.

Breaking this cycle can be instrumental in alleviating the symptoms of IBS and the resulting anxiety.

A study in 2002 by Lee et al: The Efficacy of Hypnotherapy in the Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Using hypnotherapy, showed evidence that hypnotherapy has beneficial effects in improving gastrointestinal symptoms of patients with IBS.

mind and gut

In studying IBS, it is believed that the entire gut-brain axis is affected which is a bidirectional neurohumoral communication system which plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis through the central nervous system.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy has an important role to play here.

Research published in the Gut Journal showed that 71% of participants responded well to gut directed hypnotherapy and did not deteriorate over time.

The research concluded that "the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years," thereby making it "a viable therapeutic option" in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

Participants in the research also reported taking fewer drugs and did not need to visit their GPs as frequently after receiving hypnotherapy.

reduce and calm

There is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome, but in Matt’s experience, hypnosis and hypnotherapy can reduce the severity of the symptoms and be brought under control to the point where the condition is manageable and in some cases diminish them to the point of being unnoticeable.

Recognising external factors such as stress, depression or anxiety which can exacerbate irritable bowel syndrome symptoms and treating these with hypnotherapy is straight forward.

Underlying unconscious stress is sometimes harder to recognise at first and this is where hypnosis is ideally placed to help as it accesses the unconscious mind.

Matt Jacobs at London Hypnosis has helped hundreds of individuals break free from the cycle of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the resulting anxiety.

The power of self hypnosis is a key component of treating IBS at London hypnosis

"Can hypnotherapy help with IBS?" It’s a question Matt is asked on a regular basis by IBS sufferers. With his experience in treating IBS, the answer is yes, it can indeed help. This opinion is also backed by clinical research and evidence that has been done over the years that has looked at the efficacy of treating IBS with hypnotherapy.

The Debilitating Impact of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic and often debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and excessive gas, IBS can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. The unpredictable nature of the condition makes it challenging for sufferers to engage in daily activities, work, or even social events without the fear of an unexpected flare-up. The constant discomfort and anxiety surrounding symptoms can lead to a cycle of stress, which only exacerbates the problem.

Understanding the Causes of IBS

While the exact cause of IBS remains unknown, several factors are believed to contribute to its onset and persistence. These include abnormalities in gut motility, heightened sensitivity to pain, imbalances in gut bacteria, and even food intolerances. Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression also play a significant role, as they can directly affect gut function. Some research suggests that IBS may be linked to past infections or a history of digestive issues, making it a multifaceted condition that requires a holistic approach to treatment.

The Psychological Connection: The Gut-Brain Axis

The gut and brain are intricately connected through the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system that regulates digestive function. Stress and anxiety can trigger IBS symptoms by disrupting this connection, leading to increased gut sensitivity and irregular bowel movements. Many sufferers experience worsening symptoms during periods of heightened stress, making it clear that mental well-being plays a crucial role in managing the condition.

How Hypnotherapy Can Alleviate IBS Symptoms

Hypnotherapy has been extensively researched as an effective treatment for IBS, with studies showing that it can significantly reduce symptoms and even lead to long-term remission. Hypnosis works by accessing the subconscious mind, helping to reframe negative thought patterns that contribute to stress and gut dysfunction. Through guided relaxation and visualization techniques, individuals can retrain their gut-brain connection to promote normal digestive function and reduce hypersensitivity.

Self-Hypnosis as a Powerful Tool Against IBS

Self-hypnosis is a highly effective method for managing IBS symptoms on a daily basis. By practicing self-hypnosis regularly, sufferers can calm their nervous system, decrease anxiety, and gain better control over their gut function. Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive relaxation, and guided imagery allow individuals to shift their focus away from pain and discomfort, creating a sense of ease and control over their digestive system.

Breaking the IBS-Stress Cycle with Hypnosis

Many IBS sufferers find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of stress and symptoms, each feeding into the other. Hypnosis helps to break this cycle by addressing the root cause of stress and reprogramming the body’s response to it. By learning to manage stress more effectively through hypnosis, individuals can reduce flare-ups and prevent future episodes, leading to a more stable and comfortable life.

The Effectiveness of Online Hypnotherapy for IBS

For those unable to access in-person hypnotherapy, online hypnotherapy offers an equally effective alternative. Through virtual sessions, individuals can receive personalized guidance and learn self-hypnosis techniques from the comfort of their own home. Online hypnotherapy has been shown to produce the same positive results as face-to-face sessions, making it a convenient and accessible option for IBS sufferers worldwide.

West End

My quality of life was really being impacted living with IBS. I had heard hypnotherapy could help but never really researched it until a friend recommended Matt to me. He taught me self hypnosis which not only helped me with my IBS but with other areas in my life where I was acting irrationally.

Home Visit

I was diagnosed with IBS after having having every test under the sun and taking all sorts of medication, none of which ever worked for me. Matt came to home for my hypnotherapy sessions as I was finding it more and more difficult to leave the house. He massively reduced the IBS cramps I used to have.

Edgware

I developed IBS after my parents split up when I was at school. This was a very traumatic time for me. I sought help from Matt at London Hypnosis and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. He has not only helped me with my IBS but I’ve seen him for other issues  related to my chilhood as well now.

Online

I had hypnotherapy for IBS online with Matt. Right from the outset, I knew he was someone that I felt I could trust and open up to. He is very easy going and non judgemental. I don’t find it easy to talk about my issues, but Matt made the process one where I felt I was really listened to.
